Living alone has several benefits and downsides. In the end, we all have to agree that it is an important decision to make despite all the downsides. Living alone can give you the freedom we all want but more than that, it can allow you to be dependent on yourself, learn through every situation, be more responsible, and manage everything all by yourself. If you are new to living alone or are considering living alone, these are a few tips that I believe will help you in staying sane and happy.
Organize Your Place Efficiently
When you start living alone you will experience that you are out of dishes or clothes because you didn’t get the time to do it the previous day. You may feel lazy at times and since there is no one to keep a check on you, you may end up staying in your bed, scrolling through your social media for hours without even realizing.
This is why it is important to prioritize household chores over your leisure time. Maintaining your house when you live alone can be as easy or as difficult as you want it to be. If you put in a little extra effort and clean that table or the plate as soon as you use it, you may not experience a mess later. Also, instead of piling your clothes on the bed, stack them properly in the wardrobe (we all have been there, you are not alone).
Have a Routine
Having a routine is extremely important now that you are responsible for everything. You need to wake up early so that you can use your morning to clear your head and prepare yourself for the day. Preparing your breakfast and packing your lunch if you work would be an added task so you will need time for that as well. Moreover, having a routine and sticking to it has several health benefits. One should have a well planned morning as well as evening routine. Both the routines should cover household chores and dedicated time for self care. In the self care routine you can include meditation, working out, writing in a journal, listening to slow calming music, reading a book, doing something you like, and going out for a walk or run.
Connect With Neighbors
You should connect with the neighbors. Let them know you are new in the locality, make friends, invite them for tea or coffee some day, go out for a walk with them. It is good and kind of important to make friends where you live. At least you will have someone to talk to and not to forget neighbors are probably the first people who will come to help you if something happens. They are close, you can always ask for help or help them.
Go Out, Explore the City
It is easy to stay inside when you are alone but this is something you should avoid. Staying alone, inside your home, not going out or meeting people can take a toll on your mental health. If you have friends in your city, go out for coffee or maybe plan brunch with the group. Talk to them about your work and life. This will help you unwind better and a little outing and interaction will energize you.
If you don’t have friends in the city, choose to take yourself out on a date. Go out to a new place, order your favorite meal, enjoy it. Avoid using your phone during this time, and if there is some stranger sitting next to you that you can talk to interact. It is never too late to make friends and trust me talking to strangers is great. You get to learn so many new things. Moreover, there is a chance that they are already from the city hence they can help you explore it better.
Make Sure You Are Safe
Living alone can be a little scary at times as well. Keeping your door locked at all times is something you should never take lightly. If you are going out, make sure you are not being followed by anyone back home. Don’t bring strangers home and have your phone charged at all times. You need to be very particular about people around you because the world is definitely not safe. If you feel there is something wrong, don’t ignore that and seek help. If you are a woman and the presence of men bothers you feel free to search for female bodyguards for hire.
